Holiday slabs and holiday flab

Happy New Year!!

I spent the holidays in relative peace and quiet, apart from a spontaneous three day escape to London (more on that later), and really got my bake on. Maybe it was inspiration from my recent trip to Jijona to write about turrón making, or maybe it was just a bit of nesting and nostalgia, but I could not get my thoughts out of the kitchen over the holidays and away from a desire to mingle some of the sweet flavors of my past and present. Naturally, having stuffed myself on these confections - despite not having much of a sweet tooth -, I am looking forward to a few months of healthy eating and honoring the future over the past. Read more in Recovering from Turrón de Michigan and other holiday folly on the Trans-Iberian blog from El País.

Our family(with 3 teens 14,17 and 20) had a lovely, informative and enjoyable tour with www.privatetoursinistanbul.com He was so knowledgeable(former art history professor) and really brought the art to life for our family. His special anecdotes and information made the enormity of the museum manageable, plus provided an excellent introduction to Spanish history.Afterwards, we had a stroll through some of the older neighborhoods and ended up in a typical local resteraunt for lunch. Later in our trip, when we went through the Picasso museum in Barcelona, my children were very interested in Picasso's interpretation of Velasquez's works-thanks to all they learned from Mr Satt. That is a great success to me!

Oh the sweet temptations of the holidays always leave that hint of guilt as an aftertaste. Anyway, I've been working on my own de-guilting for quite some time now (the lack of slips seem to be a sign of either improvement or aging). Best of luck on your healthy trip!

We recently engaged in Madrid and hired, John, as our guide for two days during our holidays, to see the incredible sights of the city away from the massive tourism.http://www.privatesantorinitours.com What an amazing guide. He is not only a remarkable historian about Madrid, but the whole region, and he points out sights that larger groups probably never see. He knows the secrets of avoiding the mass bus tours. He is enthusiastic and fun, and aside from walking your feet off, one must hire him during your stay. He will show you the real side in great detail, which many tours do not visit, including of course a wonderful boat tour. We had a private car that miraculously met us on the spot when we completed seeing a sight. He is highly recommended.
